Tom Moran developed the Move One Chess program after successfully teaching chess throughout the city for several years! He gained extensive classroom experience with Title 1 schools in Harlem, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx while working for Chess-in the-Schools. He is also a USCF Certified Chess Coach, level 3.
Many of his students have excelled at chess, including his own two children. At the age of 9, his daughter made it to the USCF top 100 list (nationally) as one of the top girls under the age of 13. His son first made it to his own top 100 list at age of 8 and both are still on similar lists currently.
Tom saw the immense benefits chess was providing his family, so he started teaching chess classes in his neighborhood to share that benefit. Tom wants children to be able to experience chess and reap the many rewards that come with it regardless of age and income. He has been teaching chess in schools for several years and has successfully introduced the benefits of the world’s greatest game to thousands of elementary students in the NYC area. Many of his students have competed successfully in state and national competitions. Since Tom started playing chess in tournaments at a late age, he sees himself as an active learner. He therefore does not take a beginner’s struggles for granted.
Tom’s approach to chess is unique and often informed by his experience with his own children as well as his artist background, with the use of visual aids. He has seen the value of chess, especially academically, for his students firsthand-- no matter their level of play. He teaches children not to be afraid to make mistakes but see them as learning opportunities. Through chess, Tom teaches creative problem solving, memory, foresight, focus, mental fortitude, and sportsmanship; skills they can take from the board and apply to the rest of their lives.
